Chess Review

Chess reviewerMarc

I remember sitting down at the dining room table with my father when I was little and learning to play chess on his old chess board. I wasn't always very good at the game, so he often beat me, but it was definitely a great tool that taught me how to strategize and think ahead.

Now that I'm older and live states away from my dad, we can't just sit down like we used to. However, the Chess app in the mobile play store makes it possible for us to enjoy our favorite game together once again. With the help of a few features in the app, I've even beat him a few times!

Choose A Theme

Chess boards generally all look about the same, but there are some boards out there that look more fancy or polished than others. In the Chess app, you can choose from seven different themes that will not only change the color and style of your chess board, but it will also change the stylization of the surface in which your board sits.

One of my favorite themes looks as though you have your chess board on a picnic table in a park somewhere, as there are leaves and fall debris scattered on the worn wood of the surface you're playing on.

Select Difficulty

Chess can be a very challenging game, so if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed after a few lost games, then perhaps you should try practicing with AI and choose a lesser difficulty.

There are ten difficulties to choose from when you play chess, so you can either challenge yourself to a tougher game with a higher difficulty setting, or relax with something a little less challenging.

Game Assistant

If changing the difficulty isn't helping you enough, take comfort in knowing that there is a built-in game assistant that will help you learn how to play the game more efficiently.

The game helper will show you exactly which spaces you can move each of your pieces to as you hover over them. So, if you're having a hard time visualizing a move, use the game assistant to help you figure out the best place to move to.

Chess is a wonderful game that not only helps you to strengthen your strategizing and visualization skills, but it is also a great way to interact with other players who share your intellectual interests.
