Google Docs Review

Google Docs reviewerMarc

Google has come a long way since it first began as a simple search engine. Google was the first search engine on the internet. They have since expanded to better compete with Microsoft and have created many products that outperformed their competition, one of those products surely is Google Docs.

Google Docs Overview

Businesses world-wide use it as part of the paid Google for Work service or the free stand-alone version. It is free to download and save files in the Docs format and Google Docs files are fully compatible with Microsoft Word and other software like OpenOffice or Pages. Whenever you save a Google Doc to your computer the file will automatically be compatible with Microsoft Word. This way anyone you send the document to can open it even if that person does not have Google Docs on their computer.

Is Google Docs Available Offline?

Yes, Google has created a version of Docs that is available offline. The Docs app is not available in the Microsoft store. It is available in the Google Play store as well as iTunes. If you want Docs available offline for your Windows-based computer or mobile device, you can easily use the web-based Google Docs product line.

Is Google Docs Available for Apple?

Yes, Google Docs is available to download from the Apple App Store. Simply search the App Store for Google Docs. Google Docs is not a standard install on the iPhone. The Google Docs app must be downloaded and installed separately. When installing Google Docs on the iPhone simply follow the onscreen prompts. This will assist you in getting the docs app installed on your iPhone or iPad.

Is Google Docs Pre-Installed on Android Devices?

No, Docs is not a standard install for Android devices. Android users must go to the Google Play store and download the app. After downloading the app simply follow the onscreen instructions to install the app.

Google Docs Features

Google Docs are automatically saved to the Google Drive associated with your Android Gmail account. With this in mind, the files can then be shared with whoever you would like to share it with. To share a Google Docs you simply click on the share icon at the top right of the screen. Once tapped the share icon will display a link. This is the link to the Google Docs you just created. Whoever has this link can view and even edit the Google Docs available at that page.  Alternatively you can then also edit and adjust the permissions, to share it only with certain people instead of making it public.

With Google Docs you never have to worry about losing your work. As stated earlier when a Google Docs is created the document is automatically saved to the Google Drive account with the Gmail address associated with your Android device. This is true even when you are working on a Google Docs file offline. The document will be saved to the Google Drive account once you regain your internet connection. Once saved to the Google Drive account it will stay there until you delete it.

A feature available with Google Docs that is not available in the Microsoft Word app is the fact that you can do your research right from Docs. You do not need switch apps or do a quick Google search in your browser. For this purpose Google Docs comes with a dedicated research button. The research link will take you to Google search engine to conduct your research without leaving the Docs page, which I find is an extremely helpful feature that saves a lot of time.

Another excellent feature with Google Docs is that you do not need Microsoft Word in order to open Microsoft Word documents from others. You can simply select the document that was sent to you and open it without needing to convert it to Google Docs. This is a key feature of all Google Drive apps. They are automatically compatible with all Microsoft Office documents.

App Permissions

The Google Docs app needs a few special permissions to operate on your Android phone or tablet. The app will request access to your contacts so the software can suggest contacts for sharing documents. It also needs access to your storage so that you can open or save the document from / to an SD card or USB storage drive.

Conclusion

You might ask if it's worth downloading the Google Docs app if you can already use it in your browser. Because of all the added convenient features the app has vs. the web version and it's persistence of written text it is definitely the better choice if you're working on a mobile device. And the number of total downloads confirms that many others feel the same way.
