Google PDF Viewer

Google PDF Viewer Description

Google PDF viewer is currently only available for Android.

It enables you to view any PDF file and is not meant to replace the PDF preview functionality of Google Drive, but is meant to provide you with a stand-alone app for environments where you cannot use Google Drive for whatever reason.

The app is meant to be mainly used in conjunction with the Android for work program.

You can view PDF files, print directly from the app. It also comes with an integrated search function that searches the contents of the file.

While you're able to copy text, as the name already suggests, there is no option to edit PDF files.

Google PDF Viewer Review

Download Google PDF viewer if you need a simple app to open PDF files. It enables you to print, search and copy text from PDF files. As many of you know Adobe is not compatible with Android phones and tablets, and usually PDF files can be viewed using the Google Drive app.

But you might not have Google Drive installed, don't want it or you're running an Android environment where this app isn't supported. For example if you're using a company device, like Android For Work or similar...

This is where Google PDF viewer comes in handy.

Google PDF Viewer Platforms

The PDF viewer is currently only available for Android, Apple devices have their own PDF viewer included, for example in iBooks. Windows is all about Adobe PDF Reader, so there is no need to use Google's version.

Downsides Of Google PDF Reader

Sometimes opening PDF files after downloading a bigger file, isn't working with the Google PDF viewer.

This issue seems to appear only with big PDF files of 20MB+ though.

Another drawback is that text-highlighting isn't supported, and also the search isn't very good either.

If you have many PDF files you find yourself trying to remember in which folder you saved it.

There are no significant key features of the Google PDF viewer. Google states in the description that they have built the app to help those who are in an office be more productive. They have added the app as part of their standard apps in the Google Drive suite. These standard apps include the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. By adding the Google PDF viewer to the list of standard apps with the Google Drive they have eliminated the possibility that your phone will catch a virus from an app that was free at the Google Play store.

Are There Alternative PDF Viewers for Android?

Yes, there are many alternatives for the Google PDF Viewer. Conducting a simple search in the Google Play store for PDF viewer should yield plenty of results for you. Some of these apps charge and some are free like Google. The ones that charge for the use of their app are not necessarily better than the Google PDF viewer. Like the free ones, they might not work at all.

The best PDF Viewer in my experience is the one that comes along with Google Drive, so if you have a choice then I highly recommend going for Google Drive.

Phone Permissions

As with most apps, there are several permissions required by the Google PDF viewer app, which include your identity, the device storage, media and contacts. These permissions are all necessary in order to be able to open & view PDF files.

If you don't have restrictions on what apps you can download, I would recommend using Google Drive to view PDF files.

The Google PDF Viewer is extremely basic and really meant mostly for light usage where there is no alternative available.
