Google+ Plus Review

Google+ Plus reviewerMarc

Google+ is Googles attempt at creating a social-network like experience for their users.

Google+ was originally released in 2011, to replace Google Buzz which was integrated into Gmail and let users share content and create micro-blogs.

For quite some time Google+ was not very welcomed by users and actually downright ignored. This was mainly due to Google not being able to create a good user experience that could compete with what Facebook had to offer.

During recent years, Google made huge strides in improving their service on both the web and mobile platforms. With one sad exception to this day being the Windows Phone platform.

Sorry Windows phone users, no Google+ for you...

Recent Enhancements

The bottom navigation saw a refreshment earlier this year, where the "Collections" tab was renamed to "Discover"  to bring the mobile experience in-line with the web version.

The functionality of the tab also changed in that the "Discover" tab now doesn't immediately show you the featured collections, but instead lists updates from the various accounts you follow.

To reach the collections, you now have to tap on the "View All" link in the top-right hand corner in the app.

As you can see there were no really big changes, but if you are a long-time user you will probably appreciate the details in these changes.

Performance

This is where a lot of user complaints are originating still, the apps performance compared to what we all know from other Google apps is kind of sluggish and slow.

Some users found that clicking on images didn't work or was resulting on "Not Found" errors.

This is an area where Google still has quite a bit of work to do to bring us an experience like the Facebook app offers it.

Image Uploads & Commenting

Currently Google+ allows for only one image per post, which is quite frankly awkward and makes posting not really enjoyable. Sometimes pictures do say more than a thousand words, and you just want to be able to add all of your images into a single post.

Commenting in itself works very smooth and without issues, but sadly many legitimate comments are still being flagged by Google as spam.

It's a well-known fact that Google likes to automate things, and in this case it just goes to show that human reviewers are simply better at detecting spam than any of our current algorithms can.

Conclusion

The whole Google+ service made significant improvements over the last few years, it is quite an enjoyable experience on the web, but the mobile app doesn't quite add up to the rest of the experience.

If Google would improve on their spam detection and don't put all users under general suspicion to be spammers, it would be a lot more fun to use it.

If you know a lot of people using Google+ go ahead and use it, you can't make a mistake here really. But don't expect a "Facebook-Killer" just yet.
