Imo Review

Imo reviewerMarc

IMO is an instant-messenger application that is actively developed by imo.im.

It serves the same purpose as other apps in this market, like for example the WhatsApp Messenger App, the Facebook Messenger or Viber.

While IMO isn't on par with these other apps when looking at functionality or user-base, it is a pretty good alternative for making free audio or video calls.

Installing IMO

IMO setup is as straight forward as WhatsApp, and very similar also. You have to enter your phone number, and then enter a verification code that you receive by SMS. IMO seems to be using a cheap provider for sending those out, compared to other messaging apps it can take a few minutes for these verification messages to arrive. Minor annoyance, but it could be improved.

IMO Features

IMO has a lot of functionality that is absolutely similar to other messenger apps.

They stand out mostly for their free high-quality video calling feature, which in my experience is much better than for example Skypes video chat, and miles ahead of what Viber offers.

IMO also offers end-to-end encryption, which today is pretty much standard.

What I find where IMO lacks is user settings. You can not manage a lot of settings to customize IMO to your liking, and also privacy / data protection management is lacking.

This will most likely improve now due to the new GDPR rules imposed on all companies collecting private data about european citizens.

Conclusion

While not, yet, playing with the big boys IMO certainly is a good app that delivers what it says it can do. Personally I like to use it as alternative for video calling. Or when I simply don't want to log in WhatsApp or Skype to not be "bothered" by contacts who can see me being online :)
