Instagram is hard at work to improve their app for users as well as influencers and businesses alike.
This year has been full of updates targeted at improving user security & privacy, this probably also has a lot to do with the GDPR rules that have been released earlier this year in may and require businesses world-wide to improve data protection standards for European users.
User Security & Privacy
Instagram just released an expanded set of security settings that finally implement Two-factor authentication.
What Two-factor authentication does is to require you to enter a security code texted to your mobile phone number, in addition to the usual username / password combination.
This increases account security immensely and prevents you from being an easy target for hackers.
Just like Facebook, Instagram is now testing new shopping features that give Business users & Brands more options to sell their merchandise. Shopping is now integrated into Instagram stories and an algorithm takes care of presenting users products & brands they like.
Game App Downloads
Instagram also implemented new ad types for gaming advertisers, which will present more closely targeted ads to Instagrammers based on their likeliness to download or upgrade to paid versions of games.
Instagram is a really great app that keeps you consistently entertained and receives many updates. But the current direction seems to be to try to squeeze every bit of monetization out of the app. Instagram needs to be careful not to follow the Snapchat path and anger users with too many ads.
